S.R. No. 861 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Vann M. Kennedy will celebrate his 90th birthday 1-3 on May 20, 1995, and to his family and many delighted friends this 1-4 event promises to be a truly joyous and memorable occasion; and 1-5 WHEREAS, During the course of an impressive career that 1-6 has spanned more than six decades, Mr. Kennedy has distinguished 1-7 himself in the fields of journalism, broadcasting, and law and has 1-8 devoted much of his time and boundless energy to the service of his 1-9 community, state, and nation; and 1-10 WHEREAS, For many years, this remarkable gentleman was 1-11 a familiar sight around the corridors of the State Capitol, 1-12 serving as capital correspondent for the Houston Chronicle, 1-13 Dallas Times-Herald, San Antonio Light, Beaumont Enterprise, 1-14 and Universal reporting service; a commentator and news analyst 1-15 for KTBC in 1939, he founded and copublished the Texas State House 1-16 Reporter, a widely respected legislative information and publishing 1-17 service; and 1-18 WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Kennedy put his career 1-19 on hold to answer his nation's call to arms; his tours of duty 1-20 with the United States Army took him to the War Department, 1-21 Northwest Service Command, and the China-Burma-India Theater, 1-22 and this patriotic American ultimately attained the rank of 1-23 colonel as a member of the United States Army Reserves, infantry 2-1 branch; and 2-2 WHEREAS, On his return to civilian life, Mr. Kennedy 2-3 embarked on a successful career in broadcasting, and today 2-4 he is known throughout the media industry as the founder and 2-5 principal stockholder of the Corpus Christi Broadcasting Company, 2-6 Incorporated, and of K-SIX Television, Incorporated; he is also 2-7 the president and general manager of two television stations, 2-8 KVTV in Laredo and KZTV in Corpus Christi, and of two Laredo radio 2-9 stations, KSIX and KEXX-FM; and 2-10 WHEREAS, In addition to his extraordinary work as a 2-11 journalist and broadcaster, this fine Texan has found the time to 2-12 earn his law degree and practices as an attorney-at-law when not 2-13 handling the day-to-day details of his media companies; he has also 2-14 maintained his ties to the Texas statehouse as a preeminent leader 2-15 in the Democratic Party and has brought his expertise to the 2-16 Democratic State Convention, Democratic State Executive Committee, 2-17 and Democratic National Convention; and 2-18 WHEREAS, As a member of the Texas State Historical 2-19 Survey Committee and Texas Civil War Centennial Commission, 2-20 Mr. Kennedy has helped bring Texas history to life for citizens 2-21 of the Lone Star State and has preserved Texas history for future 2-22 generations; the vice-president of the Texas World's Fair Commission, 2-23 he was appointed to both the Texas Sesquicentennial Commission and 2-24 the Texas Centennial of Statehood Commission and is a past director 2-25 of the Texas Historical Foundation; and 3-1 WHEREAS, Determined to make his community a better place in 3-2 which to work, live, and raise a family, Mr. Kennedy has worked 3-3 with countless civic and charitable associations, including 3-4 Goodwill Industries, the Symphony Society of Corpus Christi, and 3-5 the Nueces County Chapter of the American Red Cross; he currently 3-6 is a member of the National Council of United Service Organizations 3-7 and is a Nueces County Alternate for the Coastal Bend Council of 3-8 Governments; and 3-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Kennedy inspires all who know him with his 3-10 energetic spirit, generosity, and enthusiasm for life, and it is 3-11 indeed appropriate that he be given special legislative recognition 3-12 and praise as he reaches a truly significant milestone in his life; 3-13 now, therefore, be it 3-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-15 74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Vann M.
