No. 874 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 William Wallace Brown 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas notes with sadness the passing of 1-6 William Wallace "Coach" Brown at age 86, and wishes to extend to 1-7 his family and to the community of Lubbock condolences on the loss 1-8 of this worthy gentleman; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Wallace Brown was born July 29, 1908, in Dothan, 1-10 Alabama, and he was in the right time and the right place and 1-11 possessed the ability to play for the University of Alabama from 1-12 1927 to 1930, a glory year in which the undefeated Crimson Tide 1-13 rolled on to the 1931 Rose Bowl; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A man of unswerving ability and integrity, Mr. Brown 1-15 went on to coach football at Alabama's Dothan High School for nine 1-16 years before the outbreak of the World War II, when he served in 1-17 the United States Army Air Corps; and 1-18 WHEREAS, After his discharge, from 1946 to 1949, he worked as 1-19 an assistant football coach and trainer at Texas Tech University, 1-20 where he met his wife, Flossie Burkholder, and the couple was 1-21 married on November 25, 1948; during the following years Mr. Brown 1-22 demonstrated his ability to take on new challenges by obtaining a 1-23 master's degree in business administration from Texas Tech University; 2-1 and 2-2 WHEREAS, He then focused on what would become his life's work, 2-3 and in 1948 he founded Brown's Sport Shop, which became an integral 2-4 part of the community; and 2-5 WHEREAS, The outgoing and cooperative spirit of this highly 2-6 respected gentleman found expression in his many community groups, 2-7 and he belonged to the Downtown Lions Club, Westminster Presbyterian 2-8 Church, the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association, and the Red Raider 2-9 Club, and as well, he was an honorary member of the Texas Tech 2-10 Lettermen's Association; and he retired from his shop in 1978 and 2-11 devoted more time to leisure and to community service; and 2-12 WHEREAS, This devoted husband, athlete, and businessman will 2-13 be sorely missed; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 74th Legislature, hereby extend heartfelt sympathy to his beloved 2-16 wife, Mrs. Flossie Burkholder Brown; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-18 Mrs. Brown as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 2-19 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it 2-20 do so in memory of William Wallace Brown. 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the above 2-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-25 on May 1, 1995, by a rising vote. 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 Secretary of the Senate 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 Member, Texas Senate
