By: Lucio S.R. No. 882 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to join the 1-3 citizens of the Rio Grande Valley in honoring Dr. Mario E. Ramirez 1-4 who has been selected as Border Texan of the Year; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Few residents of South Texas need an introduction to 1-6 this distinguished gentleman who returned to the community of his 1-7 birth in order to assure the welfare and betterment of his fellow 1-8 citizens; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The recipient of a Family Doctor of the Year award 1-10 from the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Ramirez first 1-11 opened a medical practice in Roma, Texas, in 1950; his name soon 1-12 became synonymous with excellent care and sympathetic understanding 1-13 of the problems facing others; and 1-14 WHEREAS, As his practice grew, so did his determination to 1-15 give back to the community that had nurtured him; instrumental in 1-16 the establishment of the Starr County Memorial Hospital, he served 1-17 as its first chief of staff and was elected to that position twice 1-18 more; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Dr. Ramirez shared his expertise with others on 1-20 numerous boards and commissions, and his keen insight has been 1-21 especially helpful to the Texas Rural Health Task Force and the 1-22 National Advisory Council for Maternal, Infant, and Fetal Nutrition; 1-23 and 2-1 WHEREAS, A strong believer in education as a means out of 2-2 grinding poverty, Dr. Ramirez spearheaded an effort to recognize 2-3 academically outstanding high school students at an annual awards 2-4 banquet; and 2-5 WHEREAS, As a member of The Development Board of 2-6 The University of Texas at Austin and the Board of Regents of 2-7 The University of Texas System, Dr. Ramirez always offered 2-8 invaluable and perceptive advice; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Dr. Ramirez excels in his role as loving husband 2-10 to Sarah and devoted father to Mario, Jr., Patricia Anne, 2-11 Norman Michael, Jaime Eduardo, and Roberto Luis; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The true wealth and measure of a man can often be 2-13 judged by the number of people he can count as friends and by 2-14 this standard, Dr. Ramirez can be deemed one of the wealthiest 2-15 men in the Rio Grande Valley; now, therefore be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 74th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of service to 2-18 others of Dr. Mario Ramirez and extend heartfelt congratulations 2-19 to him on being the recipient of a much deserved honor; and, be 2-20 it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 Dr. Mario Ramirez as an expression of highest esteem and utmost 2-23 respect from the Texas Senate. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on May 1, 1995. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
