    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
    1-3  to recognize Johnnie L. Calvert for her more than 50 years of
    1-4  outstanding public service to her community as a teacher and
    1-5  volunteer; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, This distinguished lady has contributed so much
    1-7  to her church, school, neighborhood, and city that a committee
    1-8  of citizens is holding The Builder of a Legacy Banquet to honor
    1-9  Mrs. Calvert on May 7, 1995; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, She moved to El Paso in 1944 and began teaching at
   1-11  Douglas High School; she completed 30 years of teaching upon her
   1-12  retirement from the field in 1974; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Since her official retirement, Mrs. Calvert
   1-14  has stayed extremely busy volunteering her vital services to
   1-15  innumerable worthy causes; she has served on the board of directors
   1-16  of the American Heart Association and the National Conference of
   1-17  Christians and Jews; past president of the McCall Day Nursery
   1-18  Board, she served on the Health Planning Advisory Committee of
   1-19  the West Texas Congress of Governments; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, She has also served on the Committee for Human
   1-21  Relations, Race Relations Forum, the Community Relations Commission,
   1-22  and the Executive Committee of the National Association for the
   1-23  Advancement of Colored People; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, As a member of the American Heart Association
    2-2  board from 1973 through 1978, this energetic woman organized
    2-3  blood pressure screenings at various centers throughout the city;
    2-4  she also worked for the El Paso Community Health Fair and received
    2-5  a citation for outstanding volunteer service in 1983; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Mrs. Calvert's service to her community has been
    2-7  so well known for so long that Governor John Connally proclaimed
    2-8  April 29, 1972, as "Johnnie Calvert Day"; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, She has received innumerable honors for her
   2-10  outstanding service, and as a Retired Senior Volunteer devotes
   2-11  many hours to taking senior citizens for medical treatments; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mrs. Calvert is an active
   2-13  member of Saint James-Myrtle United Methodist Church and has held
   2-14  offices at the local, district, and conference level; such an
   2-15  eminent lady is certainly deserving of legislative recognition;
   2-16  now, therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-18  74th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the life of
   2-19  service of Johnnie L. Calvert and extend best wishes to her
   2-20  for the years to come; and, be it further
   2-21        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
   2-22  for Mrs. Calvert, under the Official Seal of the Senate, as an
   2-23  expression of the highest esteem and regard of the Texas Senate.
