    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Doug Jackson of Nederland, Texas, for his outstanding
    1-4  artistic proficiency in painting; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, He is being honored in a ceremony on May 11, 1995,
    1-6  at the Houston County Historical Commission in Crockett; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Doug Jackson was born in 1953 in Port Arthur, Texas;
    1-8  he was born with cerebral palsy and attended Hughen School for
    1-9  Crippled Children in Port Arthur; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Determined and enthusiastic, he painted his first
   1-11  painting when he was was about 11 years old, and the director of
   1-12  the school purchased it from him; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Later, Doug's speech teacher encouraged Doug to
   1-14  continue painting and perfect his art; in 1966 Doug began entering
   1-15  art shows with artists who did not have disabilities; in his first
   1-16  show, he won second place with a still life entitled "Nostalgia";
   1-17  and
   1-18        WHEREAS, In 1969, Doug met Jimmy Durante and presented him
   1-19  with a painting that Mr. Durante hung in his living room; in 1975,
   1-20  Bob Hope was presented with a Doug Jackson painting; in May of that
   1-21  same year Doug graduated from the Hughen School; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Doug continued to enter art shows and win prizes; he
   1-23  entered a show in Harrisburg, and one in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
    2-1  and won first prize both times; he has continued entering and
    2-2  winning competitions; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, He has recently painted a series of old train
    2-4  stations and depots which are being featured in an exhibit on
    2-5  May 11, 1995; this promising artist and his works are certainly
    2-6  worthy of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-8  74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Doug Jackson on his
    2-9  unique and captivating paintings and wish him well in his
   2-10  upcoming exhibit; and, be it further
   2-11        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-12  him as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate.
