    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Citizens of Mexico and Americans of Mexican ancestry
    1-3  always remember with great pride "El Cinco de Mayo," the memorable
    1-4  date which recalls the triumph of Mexico over an invading French
    1-5  army at Puebla; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, On May 5, 1862, a valiant but ill-equipped Mexican
    1-7  army, led by Texas native General Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated the
    1-8  French army of Emperor Napoleon III; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Considered the best army at the time, the French
   1-10  were decisively routed by General Zaragoza and his brave soldiers,
   1-11  thus delaying the French occupation of Mexico for more than a year;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, One of the most glorious victories in Mexican
   1-14  history, the Battle of Puebla galvanized the Mexican people and
   1-15  inspired them to unite as a nation and gain control of their own
   1-16  destiny; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, It is appropriate that Texans recognize the
   1-18  significance of this great victory in the history of our neighbors
   1-19  to the south and pay tribute to the memory of Ignacio Zaragoza and
   1-20  his courageous troops; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Each year on May 5, cities and towns across Texas
   1-22  and Mexico take on a festive air as they commemorate the first
   1-23  victory over the foreign invaders and celebrate a hard-won freedom;
    2-1  now, therefore, be it
    2-2        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-3  74th Legislature, hereby pay homage to the heroism of those who
    2-4  fought for independence on El Cinco de Mayo and recognize the great
    2-5  value of the celebration in building a sense of community among all
    2-6  citizens of our state; and, be it further
    2-7        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
    2-8  remembrance of this great victory for the people of Mexico and
    2-9  Texas.
