1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
1-3 recognize Dr. Napoleon B. Lewis, Sr., on the auspicious occasion
1-4 of the dedication of the Napoleon B. Lewis, Sr., Mathematics and
1-5 Science Annex at Lincoln Magnet High School in Dallas; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Born in Oakwood, Texas, and raised in
1-7 Chattanooga, Tennessee, he learned early the value of an
1-8 education; Napoleon Lewis earned his bachelor of science degree
1-9 from Morgan State University, his master of science degree from
1-10 New York University, and his doctoral degree in education from
1-11 Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and
1-12 WHEREAS, After an already impressive career in teaching
1-13 that began in 1948, Dr. Lewis was invited to join the Dallas
1-14 Independent School District in 1977 at the invitation of
1-15 Dr. Nolan Estes, who was then General Superintendent; and
1-16 WHEREAS, His success was so impressive that he was hired in
1-17 1980 as principal of Lincoln Magnet High School, nationally known
1-18 in educational circles as one of the most effective schools in the
1-19 country; and
1-20 WHEREAS, During his long and achievement-filled career,
1-21 Dr. Lewis has affected positively the lives of thousands of
1-22 children; and
1-23 WHEREAS, His commitment to education has won him numerous
2-1 awards, including a Certificate of Merit from the Government
2-2 of the District of Columbia, the Ida B. Wells Risk Taker Award
2-3 in 1992, the Texas Peace Officers Educator of the Year Award in
2-4 1993, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
2-5 People Educator of the Year Award in 1993; this distinguished
2-6 gentleman is certainly worthy of legislative recognition; now,
2-7 therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-9 74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Napoleon B. Lewis
2-10 on having a new mathematics and science annex named for him at
2-11 Lincoln Magnet High School; and, be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-13 this outstanding educator as an expression of the highest regard
2-14 of the Texas Senate.
