No. 984 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to recognize 1-3 Gardner Selby for his many achievements and for the contributions he 1-4 has made in the field of journalism; and 1-5 WHEREAS, He was born July 6, 1961, in London; his mother, 1-6 Lucy Garretson, studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music and met 1-7 her future husband, Dr. Henry Selby, who taught the classics, Greek, 1-8 and Latin to London schoolchildren; and 1-9 WHEREAS, An anthropologist, Dr. Selby took his family to 1-10 Oaxaca, Mexico; Gardner also lived in Boston and Philadelphia, where 1-11 he started his first newspaper at the age of nine with the help of 1-12 his Aunt Helen; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Gardner attended The University of Texas at Austin 1-14 and was an excellent Plan II student; he served as an editor on the 1-15 Daily Texan and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor of arts 1-16 degree with honors in 1983; and 1-17 WHEREAS, He met and married Kaye Schultz while he was working 1-18 and studying in Madison, Wisconsin; they are the proud parents of 1-19 a three-year-old daughter, Anna Madison Schultz Selby; and 1-20 WHEREAS, This notable young man is a highly qualified 1-21 journalist who has been a reporter for several major daily 1-22 newspapers, including the Houston Post, the Dallas Times Herald, 1-23 and the Wichita Eagle-Beacon; and 2-1 WHEREAS, An author of numerous published articles as a 2-2 free-lance writer, Gardner Selby has won many honors which include 2-3 the Community Service Award from Capital Community Citizens in 1987 2-4 and the Texas APME for Investigative Reporting in 1994; and 2-5 WHEREAS, The accomplishments of this distinguished graduate of 2-6 The University of Texas at Austin are truly worthy of legislative 2-7 recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 74th Legislature, hereby commend Gardner Selby on his journalistic 2-10 career and wish him well in his future endeavors; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him 2-12 as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-13 ______________________________________ 2-14 President of the Senate 2-15 I hereby certify that the above 2-16 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-17 on May 8, 1995. 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 Secretary of the Senate 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Member, Texas Senate
