No. 992 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 recognizing Autry Henry, the founder of the Houston Friends of 1-4 Literacy, for her many contributions to the Hobby community; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Houston Friends of Literacy is a community-based, 1-6 nonprofit, adult education organization that provides free schooling 1-7 for those in need; it was established in 1991 after Autry Henry 1-8 discovered widespread illiteracy in a Houston community among adults 1-9 who had been passed from grade to grade in school in spite of their 1-10 lack of reading ability; and 1-11 WHEREAS, A resourceful and determined individual, Autry Henry 1-12 sought help for schooling from a number of organizations until she 1-13 realized she would need to establish her own organization; she 1-14 formed Friends of Literacy, classes were started at Glenbrook 1-15 United Methodist Church, and she received support from Houston 1-16 Community College Systems who provided an instructor; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In recognition of her hard work and her success, 1-18 Autry Henry received a trophy from the Houston Chronicle for 1-19 Literacy Volunteer of the Year in 1992; her perseverance then won 1-20 her the support of the Texas READ Commission from which she received 1-21 aid to help buy books and computer software and to finance a paid 1-22 teacher; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The majority of students in the program are welfare 2-1 mothers, but the scope has widened to include a number of immigrants 2-2 who come from all over the world, including Vietnam, Bosnia, and 2-3 Iran; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Autry Henry is an exemplary woman of remarkable 2-5 tenacity and enthusiasm, and through her dedication and leadership, 2-6 she has helped to improve the lives of many; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 74th Legislature, hereby commend Autry Henry for her many 2-9 accomplishments and extend appreciation to her for her many 2-10 contributions to the Hobby community of Houston; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-12 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-13 ______________________________________ 2-14 President of the Senate 2-15 I hereby certify that the above 2-16 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-17 on May 9, 1995. 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 Secretary of the Senate 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Member, Texas Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
