No. 1004 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Michael Wayne Terrell 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the family 1-6 and friends of Michael Wayne Terrell in mourning his untimely death 1-7 on May 2, 1995; and 1-8 WHEREAS, This talented musician and conductor, the beloved 1-9 son of Jesse Lee and Eula Mae Terrell, was born January 1, 1953, in 1-10 Dallas; after graduating from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, he 1-11 attended Southern Methodist University, where he became the first 1-12 African-American member of the Mustang Marching Band; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Armed with a master of music degree from his 1-14 alma mater, Michael began teaching and conducting in the Dallas 1-15 Independent School District; while he was choir director at 1-16 James Madison High School, his students achieved outstanding 1-17 success in University Interscholastic League competition and 1-18 performed at the Texas Music Education Convention; later, his 1-19 choirs at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing 1-20 Arts consistently won accolades at competitions throughout the 1-21 state; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Recognized by his peers as a musical genius, 1-23 Michael was one of the original principal conductors of the Junior 2-1 Black Academy's Martin Luther King, Jr., Black Musical and the Civil 2-2 Rights Movement Performance; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Dedicating his life to Christ at an early age, 2-4 Michael joined Golden Gate Baptist Church, where he lent his musical 2-5 ability to the greater glory of God through his work with the Youth 2-6 Choir, the Sanctuary Choir, and the Junior Choir; and 2-7 WHEREAS, An accomplished organist, Michael played for his 2-8 own church and later for Ebeneezer Baptist Church and Metropolitan 2-9 Baptist Church; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Michael filled the years allotted to him with a 2-11 loyal devotion to his family, his church, and his music; he used his 2-12 God-given gifts wisely and enriched those whom he influenced through 2-13 his teaching and his performances; and 2-14 WHEREAS, A cherished companion, Michael brought joy into the 2-15 hearts of all who knew him, and his loss will be keenly felt; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members 2-19 of his family: his parents, Jesse Lee and Eula Mae Terrell; his 2-20 brothers, Jesse and Ira; and his sisters, Kathleen Williams and 2-21 Libbie Lee; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-23 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 2-24 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 2-25 in memory of Michael Wayne Terrell. 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 President of the Senate 3-3 I hereby certify that the above 3-4 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-5 on May 9, 1995, by a rising vote. 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Secretary of the Senate 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 Member, Texas Senate
