1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
1-3 in honoring Barbara Bush, the most famous mother in Texas, on
1-4 Mother's Day, May 14, 1995; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Beloved and admired throughout the nation,
1-6 Barbara Bush is a special treasure to the citizens of Texas, and
1-7 Mother's Day is an appropriate opportunity to express our gratitude
1-8 to her for her many contributions to our state; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Dedicated to her life as a homemaker and as the wife
1-10 of former President George Bush, Barbara Bush is well known for her
1-11 outstanding work as the former First Lady of the United States
1-12 and as the proud mother who raised Texas Governor George W. Bush,
1-13 Jeb Bush, Neil Bush, Marvin Bush, and Dorothy Bush; she is also a
1-14 revered grandmother to 13 grandchildren; and
1-15 WHEREAS, A woman of remarkable energy and resourcefulness,
1-16 Barbara Bush has managed to successfully balance her active role
1-17 as wife, mother, and grandmother and her role as a nationally known
1-18 figure with a vigorous commitment to a wide range of social issues;
1-19 and
1-20 WHEREAS, An advocate for volunteer, community, and
1-21 corporate support of our school systems and a lifelong lover
1-22 of books, Mrs. Bush has worked fervently for the promotion of
1-23 literacy and reading and for the betterment of the educational
2-1 opportunities in our state and country; and
2-2 WHEREAS, A woman of vision and insight, Mrs. Bush believes
2-3 that many of America's social, economic, and political problems
2-4 are linked to a lack of literacy, and she has spent much of her
2-5 life helping to increase public awareness of our nation's literacy
2-6 needs; and
2-7 WHEREAS, She has participated in hundreds of literacy events
2-8 across the United States, has been an enthusiastic supporter of
2-9 intergenerational literacy programs, and serves as Honorary Chairman
2-10 of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy; and
2-11 WHEREAS, An individual of many talents and interests,
2-12 Mrs. Bush has appeared on "Mrs. Bush's Story Time," a national
2-13 radio program emphasizing the importance of reading aloud to
2-14 children, and she has written two books, C. Fred's Story and
2-15 Millie's Book, the proceeds of which benefit adult and family
2-16 literacy programs; and
2-17 WHEREAS, An ardent supporter of programs throughout the state
2-18 and nation that help children and strengthen families, Mrs. Bush
2-19 was an honorary chairman of The National Committee for Prevention
2-20 of Child Abuse, the National Committee for Adoption, the National
2-21 SAFE KIDS Campaign, and the Hispanic Family of the Year Foundation;
2-22 she is honorary chairperson of the Leukemia Society of America,
2-23 Incorporated, and was an honorary board member of the Children's
2-24 Oncology Services of Washington, D.C., Incorporated; and
2-25 WHEREAS, A distinguished lady who is valued by all for her
3-1 tremendous warmth, poise, and charm, Barbara Bush is a cherished
3-2 friend, mentor, and leader to countless citizens across the country,
3-3 and her strong, independent voice and her many accomplishments are a
3-4 special source of pride to the citizens of the Lone Star State; now,
3-5 therefore, be it
3-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-7 74th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to Barbara Bush for
3-8 her inspirational leadership and her exceptional achievements and
3-9 send sincerest best wishes to her on May 14, 1995; and, be it
3-10 further
3-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
3-12 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
