No. 1015 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Senate join the citizens of 1-3 Flower Mound, Texas, in expressing genuine pride and admiration 1-4 for the extraordinary act of kindness shown by Weldon Barber and 1-5 Nyna Shante Johnson on March 12, 1995; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Friends since the seventh grade, Weldon is a 1-7 student at Texas A&M University and Nyna is a professional singer 1-8 in New York; they were visiting their families and spending time 1-9 together; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Around 4:30 a.m. the two Marcus High School 1-11 graduates pulled up to the Texas Food Mart at Main Street and 1-12 Garden Ridge Boulevard for gas but were unable to turn on the pump; 1-13 Weldon went inside to see if there was anyone in the store and found 1-14 the clerk, Carlos Lopez, lying motionless on the floor behind the 1-15 counter; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Nyna rushed into the store when her friend called 1-17 for help; they thought the man was dead when they called to him 1-18 and there was no response; suspecting the store had been robbed 1-19 when they saw some items had fallen off the shelves, they called 1-20 911 to get help for the unconscious man; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Thanks to the quick actions and coolheadedness of 1-22 Nyna Johnson and Weldon Barber, Mr. Lopez recovered fully and was 1-23 back at work the following day; their commendable actions in a 2-1 stressful situation resulted in a happy ending to a frightening 2-2 experience; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-4 74th Legislature, hereby commend Weldon Barber for his courage 2-5 in coming to the aid of another in distress and express its 2-6 appreciation to this admirable young Texas citizen; and, be it 2-7 further 2-8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-9 Weldon Barber as a token of the deep respect and high regard 2-10 of the Texas Senate. 2-11 ______________________________________ 2-12 President of the Senate 2-13 I hereby certify that the above 2-14 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-15 on May 10, 1995. 2-16 ______________________________________ 2-17 Secretary of the Senate 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 Member, Texas Senate
