No. 1032 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize the Honorable Ron Kirk, newly elected mayor of Dallas 1-4 who will be sworn into office on June 5, 1995; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Mayor-elect Kirk was Texas Secretary of State under 1-6 former Governor Ann Richards; and 1-7 WHEREAS, This outstanding gentleman won his election in a 1-8 commanding fashion, piling up nearly two-thirds of the vote and 1-9 avoiding any need for a run-off election that both he and his 1-10 supporters had expected; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Ron Kirk won by pulling together an impressive 1-12 coalition that stretched from the boardrooms of Dallas to the city's 1-13 poorest neighborhoods; and 1-14 WHEREAS, With results from nearly all precincts in, Mr. Kirk 1-15 had 62 percent of the votes, and his nearest opponent had only 23 1-16 percent of the vote; and 1-17 WHEREAS, One of the significant historical facts of the Dallas 1-18 mayoral election is that Mayor-elect Kirk is the first black mayor 1-19 in a city that has experienced some racial tensions in the past; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Campaigning as the front-runner, he was 1-21 overwhelmingly endorsed by such well-known supporters as 1-22 Roger Staubach, former star quarterback of the hometown Dallas 1-23 Cowboys, as well as by developers and leaders from Dallas' black 2-1 communities; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The mayor-elect won 12 of 14 City Council districts 2-3 with voters who turned out to vote even though Dallas experienced 2-4 deadly storms that descended on North Texas the Friday night of 2-5 the election; certainly his impressive victory deserves legislative 2-6 recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Mayor-elect Ron Kirk on his 2-9 impressive victory; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him 2-11 as an expression of the highest esteem of the Texas Senate. 2-12 ______________________________________ 2-13 President of the Senate 2-14 I hereby certify that the above 2-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-16 on May 11, 1995. 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Secretary of the Senate 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Member, Texas Senate
