    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, All across America letter carriers provide a link
    1-3  that binds our nation together; every day carriers serve their
    1-4  routes and are keenly aware of the hunger facing many families; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 13, 1995, the National
    1-6  Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 181, in partnership with the
    1-7  United States Postal Service, the AFL-CIO, the United Way of Austin,
    1-8  and KVET/KASE radio stations will be conducting a one-day food drive
    1-9  to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, The goal is to raise 120,000 pounds of donated food
   1-11  to be distributed in Travis and 17 surrounding counties; the Capital
   1-12  Area Food Bank services 180 hunger relief organizations that feed in
   1-13  excess of 320,000 people; half of that group of 320,000 are children
   1-14  17 years of age and younger; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Experts say that one out of every five Texans lives
   1-16  at or below the poverty level; most of these families have adults
   1-17  working in low or minimum-wage jobs and are unable to meet the basic
   1-18  nutritional requirements and, as a result, turn to food pantries to
   1-19  survive; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, What began as a pilot program in 10 cities in 1991
   1-21  has grown into the largest one-day food collection in our nation;
   1-22  and
   1-23        WHEREAS, The 1993 collection nationwide exceeded 12 million
    2-1  pounds of food; this year the Letter Carrier Food Drive hopes to
    2-2  exceed the 1993 collection; combining simplicity with generosity
    2-3  is the reason this drive is so successful; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Texans have a long history of demonstrating
    2-5  humanitarian concern; this is a unique, generous, and creative
    2-6  program which will greatly benefit everyone in our nation; now,
    2-7  therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  74th Legislature, hereby commend the Letter Carrier Food Drive and
   2-10  encourage all Texans to participate in helping their fellow citizens
   2-11  who are in need; and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-13  National Association of Letter Carriers as an expression of the high
   2-14  esteem of the Texas Senate.
