No. 1037 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, As the State of Texas grows in population and cities 1-3 expand into formerly rural areas, the state's wildlife may undergo 1-4 stress as encroachment on their habitat increases; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Attwater Prairie Chicken is one of the great 1-6 natural assets of the State of Texas and one of its endangered 1-7 species; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The Attwater Prairie Chicken is in a precarious 1-9 position with only a very few birds left in the wild; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The rate of decline in this bird population exceeded 1-11 that of whooping cranes through the middle years of this century; 1-12 and 1-13 WHEREAS, The Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge was established 1-14 in July, 1972, to preserve the habitat of the endangered coastal 1-15 prairie chicken and thus preserve this bird for future generations 1-16 of Texans to enjoy; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The refuge covers 7,980 acres of land consisting of 1-18 native prairie, potholes, sandy knolls, and wooded areas; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The plight of these endangered birds is of concern 1-20 to all Texans; now, therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 1-22 74th Legislature, hereby declare May 15, 1995, as Attwater Prairie 1-23 Chicken Day in Texas to underscore the importance of this native 2-1 bird to our great state. 2-2 ______________________________________ 2-3 President of the Senate 2-4 I hereby certify that the above 2-5 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-6 on May 12, 1995. 2-7 ______________________________________ 2-8 Secretary of the Senate 2-9 ______________________________________ 2-10 Member, Texas Senate
