    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to join the
    1-3  citizens of the City of Jasper in a joyous celebration of Jasper Day
    1-4  at the State Capitol on May 22, 1995; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The lovely town of over 7,000 residents is located
    1-6  in a scenic area of East Texas that is 85 percent forested by pines
    1-7  and hardwoods and is the county seat of Jasper County, one of the
    1-8  original 23 counties created by the Republic of Texas; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The town's history dates back to 1838 when the site
   1-10  was chosen as the county seat; its proximity to B. A. Steinhagen
   1-11  Lake on the Neches River, Sam Rayburn Reservoir, and Angelina and
   1-12  Sabine National  Forests have attracted sportsmen and visitors
   1-13  from around the state to this natural environment; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, On the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad,
   1-15  Jasper is an important center for the manufacture of timber
   1-16  products; it produces lumber from local sawmills and also
   1-17  manufactures plywood, two of its major income sources; oil and gas
   1-18  production as well as agricultural products are important to the
   1-19  diverse economy of Jasper; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, In the spring, tourists flock to the town to view
   1-21  the spectacular azalea trails and to enjoy the annual Azalea Arts
   1-22  and Crafts Festival; year-round activities include the Lions Club
   1-23  PRCA Rodeo and the Fall Fest when the forests are aglow with their
    2-1  autumn colors; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Noted for its industrious and energetic residents
    2-3  who are dedicated to preserving the beauty and uniqueness of
    2-4  their environment, the City of Jasper offers excellent vacation
    2-5  opportunities to the visitor and an attractive lifestyle to those
    2-6  seeking a new home; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, The graciousness and hospitality of its residents
    2-8  are among its chief assets, and their achievements have made Jasper
    2-9  one of the most productive towns in East Texas; now, therefore,
   2-10  be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  74th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the citizens of
   2-13  Jasper for a most rewarding and entertaining celebration of Jasper
   2-14  Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented as a
   2-16  memento of this important event from the Texas Senate.
