    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize the Wheeler Springs Community in Houston County, Texas;
    1-4  and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Wheeler Springs Community has never been platted
    1-6  or incorporated; the original landholders were Martin Murchison and
    1-7  John Carroll; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Settlement in the area began when Joshua James Hall
    1-9  came into Houston County in 1835 after purchasing about 24,000 acres
   1-10  of the Ramon de la Garza grant; he brought his family and slaves who
   1-11  built a general store and established a post office in 1852; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Some of the early black families who came with
   1-13  Mr. Hall settled in and around his community during the 1840s
   1-14  and the 1850s; more families came in 1876 and these freed families
   1-15  purchased land from the Hall family some distance from the Hall's
   1-16  settlement; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The newer settlers set up their own church and
   1-18  school for their growing families; with the donation of land by
   1-19  French Taylor in 1885, neighbors met on the acreage to start work
   1-20  clearing the land; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, As they dug near a sand hill, a clear bubbling
   1-22  stream of water poured forth; the settlement was named for the
   1-23  springs discovered there; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, A Baptist sanctuary and a schoolhouse were built
    2-2  near the springs in 1905; the school was a one-room building which
    2-3  was replaced in the 1920s; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The principal of the school was Mrs. Lula Dailey;
    2-5  under her leadership the Wheeler Springs Community advanced; a large
    2-6  garden was planted to grow food for the school and a cannery began
    2-7  operations; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, The school was consolidated with the Porter Springs
    2-9  Common School District in 1959; the church and several civic
   2-10  organizations remain active; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, An official Texas Historical Marker with post will
   2-12  be dedicated on June 19, 1995; now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-14  74th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Wheeler Springs Community
   2-15  on receiving an official Texas Historical Marker; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-17  community as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate.
