No. 1095 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Oak Rest Cemetery along with the sites of Prospect 1-3 Presbyterian Church and Live Oak Female Seminary will receive 1-4 Official Texas Historical Markers at a special dedication ceremony 1-5 on May 27, 1995, in Brenham; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Prospect Presbyterian Church was organized by the 1-7 Reverend Hugh Wilson in February, 1839, on land that was part of 1-8 the Mexican land grant of James F. and Emily Perry; the second 1-9 Presbyterian Church founded in Texas, the church held worship 1-10 services in a log schoolhouse where the first Presbytery of Texas 1-11 was organized in 1840; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The Reverend James Weston Miller, the congregation's 1-13 second pastor, founded Live Oak Female Seminary in 1853, and the 1-14 church building was used for some of the classes; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Under the direction of the Reverend Mr. Miller, 1-16 a foundation was laid for a new sanctuary prior to the Civil War; 1-17 although they were never used, the foundation stones still exist; 1-18 and 1-19 WHEREAS, A new church building was erected in 1872 near the 1-20 seminary, where the congregation met until the church was disbanded 1-21 in 1928 and the members transferred to Brenham Presbyterian Church; 1-22 the 1872 building was dismantled in 1956; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Many pioneer members of Prospect Presbyterian Church 2-1 are interred in Oak Rest Cemetery, including the Miller family and 2-2 veterans of the Texas Revolution and Civil War; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Live Oak Female Seminary provided educational 2-4 opportunities to female boarding students as well as male and 2-5 female day students until 1888; Rebecca Stuart Red, the minister's 2-6 sister, was principal of the school until 1875 when she opened 2-7 Stuart Female Seminary in Austin; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Live Oak campus included the Miller home, "Oak 2-9 Lodge," which housed classes on the second floor, dormitories, 2-10 an auditorium, and a music conservatory; the Miller home was moved 2-11 and the last of the school buildings razed in the 1970s; and 2-12 WHEREAS, These historic sites of the church foundation 2-13 stones, cemetery, and seminary serve as a visual reminder of the 2-14 area's pioneer heritage; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 74th Legislature, hereby recognize the Oak Rest Cemetery, the 2-17 foundation site of Prospect Presbyterian Church, and the Live 2-18 Oak Female Seminary as they receive the Official Texas Historical 2-19 Markers signifying their important place in the lives of those 2-20 who settled this land; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented 2-22 as a memento of this notable event and as an expression of the 2-23 appreciation of the Texas Senate. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on May 17, 1995. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
