    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Texas is the home of many musical styles, including
    1-3  big band, jazz, country, blues, Dixieland, bebop, and Mexican folk
    1-4  music; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, In the 1930s, an improvisational mix of these great
    1-6  music styles brought forth an exciting form of indigenous music,
    1-7  "Western Swing," known in its early days as hillbilly jazz, country
    1-8  jazz, Texas swing, or Southwestern swing, and it is characterized
    1-9  by experimentation and bound by no limits in style or direction; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Texas is the home of the Texas Western Swing Hall of
   1-11  Fame which will be celebrated in San Marcos on May 20, 1995, to
   1-12  honor outstanding western swing artists who have contributed a
   1-13  lifetime of toe-tapping music artistry to our lives; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame is proud to
   1-15  induct into the Hall of Fame outstanding songwriters and musicians
   1-16  for their outstanding contributions to Texas music and western
   1-17  swing history, including:  the great songwriter and steel guitarist
   1-18  Ted Daffan, writer of "Truck Driver's Blues," the first trucker's
   1-19  song, "Worried Mind," and the all-time favorites "Born to Lose," "No
   1-20  Letter Today," and "Paper Doll," who is also known for his band,
   1-21  Ted Daffan and His Texans; Tiny Moore, the most important electric
   1-22  mandolin performer in the music business who performed with Bob Wills
   1-23  and the Texas Playboys and participated in the revival of Wills's
    2-1  music in 1970 with a Merle Haggard album leading to a long-term
    2-2  association with the Haggard show, and known as the pioneer of the
    2-3  five-string mandolin; Dean and Evelyn McKinney, who became famous
    2-4  for their close harmony sound as the McKinney Sisters performing
    2-5  with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, and were renowned for their
    2-6  popular mixed styles of country, western, old-time gospel and
    2-7  hymns, big band swing, and the latest popular songs; the late
    2-8  J. R. Chatwell, one of the most respected names in Western Swing
    2-9  fiddling, who recorded and toured in the late 1930s with such
   2-10  leading bands as Cliff Bruner's, Bill Boyd's, the Saddle Tramps,
   2-11  and Adolph Hofner's the San Antonians, and was known for his hot
   2-12  swing phrasing, influenced by the great jazz violinist Stuff Smith;
   2-13  and
   2-14        WHEREAS, All proud Texans claim Texas Western Swing as the
   2-15  native music of Texas; now, therefore, be it
   2-16        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-17  74th Legislature, hereby proclaim May, 1995, as Western Swing
   2-18  Month in Texas.
