1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
1-3 recognize Gladys A. Johnson who is retiring as principal of
1-4 T. J. Austin Elementary School in Tyler, Texas; and
1-5 WHEREAS, An innovative administrator, Gladys Johnson has
1-6 played a major role in making T. J. Austin Elementary School the
1-7 high-quality school it is today; and
1-8 WHEREAS, Under her superior leadership, the students at
1-9 T. J. Austin Elementary School have learned to persevere in their
1-10 work and to strive for excellence in all of their endeavors; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson's talents in the areas of instruction
1-12 and administration have long been admired by fellow educators; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Over the years, she assisted with a wide array
1-14 of activities in addition to her immediate responsibilities as
1-15 principal; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Her help was enlisted in teacher recruitment for
1-17 the Tyler Independent School District, and she participated in
1-18 numerous inservice projects; she was a demonstration teacher for
1-19 grade one and assisted in initiating the gifted pilot programs at
1-20 a number of elementary schools; and
1-21 WHEREAS, A talented principal, she helped to create a more
1-22 peaceful and appropriate environment for students by enlisting the
1-23 aid of community leaders and city officials in successfully forcing
2-1 undesirable establishments near the campus to close; and
2-2 WHEREAS, She was responsible for the establishment of a close
2-3 community/school relationship and initiated a home, school, and
2-4 community learning contract that involved citywide business people
2-5 as role models; she also implemented the Reading is Fundamental
2-6 program through which books are distributed to children in the
2-7 community; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Hardworking and resourceful, Mrs. Johnson skillfully
2-9 handled the complexities and far-reaching responsibilities of a
2-10 principal's position, and her presence at T. J. Austin Elementary
2-11 School will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it
2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13 74th Legislature, hereby express sincere appreciation to
2-14 Gladys Johnson for her notable achievements and her years of
2-15 dedication to the field of education; and, be it further
2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
2-17 as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
