S.R. No. 1113 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, It is indeed an honor for the Texas Senate to 1-3 congratulate Colleen McHugh of Corpus Christi who was recently 1-4 selected as president-elect of the State Bar of Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Past president of the Corpus Christi Bar Association, 1-6 Colleen McHugh is an attorney with the law firm of Matthews and 1-7 Branscomb and has been in the legal profession since 1981; and 1-8 WHEREAS, As a young girl growing up in Corpus Christi with her 1-9 two younger sisters, Colleen attended Saint Patrick's School and 1-10 Incarnate Word Academy; her parents instilled in her a strong work 1-11 ethic that was reinforced by an Irish nun who taught her that women 1-12 should have a strong handshake as well; and 1-13 WHEREAS, She graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1-14 1969 with a degree in journalism, married, and became the mother of 1-15 a son; with the support of her family, she decided to attend law 1-16 school; Colleen is motivated by a love for her profession and a 1-17 desire to help people solve their problems; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Specializing in labor and employment law, 1-19 Colleen McHugh plans to support current programs that help new 1-20 attorneys in their law practices and to enhance professionalism 1-21 during her presidency; and 1-22 WHEREAS, An advocate of out-of-court mediation, Ms. McHugh 1-23 was instrumental in bringing the Nueces County Commissioners Court 2-1 and the Corpus Christi Bar Association leadership together to create 2-2 the local Dispute Resolution Services Center in 1985; she has also 2-3 served as chairwoman of the state bar's alternative dispute 2-4 resolution committee; and 2-5 WHEREAS, An individual with a strong desire to serve the legal 2-6 profession, she has held several important posts with the state 2-7 bar; she was the first woman to chair the Board of Directors and 2-8 has worked on numerous committees including membership services, 2-9 nominations and election, and budget and professional development; 2-10 and 2-11 WHEREAS, Colleen McHugh brings her exceptional professional 2-12 skills and her desire to create a positive public image for lawyers 2-13 to her new position with the State Bar of Texas; now, therefore, 2-14 be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 74th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud Colleen McHugh for her 2-17 dedication and important contributions to the citizens of Texas; 2-18 and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-20 as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate. 2-21 Truan 2-22 Armbrister Henderson Ratliff 2-23 Barrientos Leedom Rosson 2-24 Bivins Lucio Shapiro 2-25 Brown Luna Sibley 3-1 Cain Madla Sims 3-2 Ellis Moncrief Turner 3-3 Gallegos Montford Wentworth 3-4 Galloway Nelson West 3-5 Harris Nixon Whitmire 3-6 Haywood Patterson Zaffirini 3-7 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 President of the Senate 3-10 I hereby certify that the above 3-11 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-12 on May 19, 1995. 3-13 ______________________________________ 3-14 Secretary of the Senate 3-15 ______________________________________ 3-16 Dean of the Senate
