    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize the 100th anniversary of the Alief Post Office; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, This signal event will be celebrated on
    1-5  August 16, 1995; the celebration will emphasize the community's
    1-6  history; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Alief, in western Harris County on the Texas and
    1-8  New Orleans Railroad, was platted in 1895 by W. T. Twitchell; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The first Anglo settler was Dr. J. S. Magee from
   1-10  Ellis County, who established a residence there in 1896; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The post office, the school district, and the
   1-12  community are named after Alief Ozelda Magee; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, After moving to the community in 1895, Mrs. Magee
   1-14  was granted permission to put a post office in her home on
   1-15  August 16, 1895; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, She may be the only postmaster in history to have
   1-17  a post office named after him or her; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, At the time the post office opened, stamps sold for
   1-19  two cents and the volume of mail was 10 to 15 pieces a day; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The Alief Post Office with its interesting history
   1-21  is certainly an institution worthy of legislative recognition; now,
   1-22  therefore, be it
   1-23        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-1  74th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Alief Post Office on its
    2-2  100th anniversary; and, be it further
    2-3        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
    2-4  Anniversary Committee as an expression of the high regard of the
    2-5  Texas Senate.
