No. 1128 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Gil Steinke 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens 1-6 across the state in mourning the loss of Gil Steinke who died 1-7 May 10, 1995, at the age of 76; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Gil Steinke was born in Ganado, Texas, and grew 1-9 up to become one of our nation's most honored coaches; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The former athletic director and head football 1-11 coach at Texas A&I University, Gil Steinke earned one of the 1-12 best collegiate coaching records in the country, and his teams 1-13 won six national championships and 10 Lone Star Conference 1-14 titles; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Athletic director at Texas A&I University from 1-16 1954 to 1982, he served as head football coach from 1954 to 1976; 1-17 he ended his coaching career with a 13-0-0 record in 1974, a 1-18 12-0-0 record in 1975, and a 13-0-0 record in 1976, at which 1-19 time the Javelinas had an awesome 39-game winning streak; and 1-20 WHEREAS, An exceptional athlete who played with the 1-21 Philadelphia Eagles, Gil Steinke became an outstanding football 1-22 coach and was named national NAIA coach of the year four times 1-23 and the American Football Coaches Association District Coach of 2-1 the Year twice; he coached five undefeated teams at Texas A&I 2-2 University and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and the 2-3 Texas Hall of Fame; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A man of remarkable talent and discipline, 2-5 Coach Steinke was known as an intense individual who was 2-6 adept at motivating others and who accepted nothing less than 2-7 excellence from his players; as a result, he produced numerous 2-8 National Football League and All-American players; and 2-9 WHEREAS, A legendary figure in the world of sports, 2-10 Gil Steinke is credited with building Texas A&I University into 2-11 a small-college powerhouse, and he was revered by his colleagues 2-12 in coaching for his belief in himself and his dedication to his 2-13 players and to his profession; he is also credited with helping 2-14 to bring integration to the game of football in Texas and was one 2-15 of the first coaches in the state to recruit black players; and 2-16 WHEREAS, A man of uncommon perseverance and a strong leader, 2-17 Gil Steinke was a highly respected individual whose coaching style 2-18 and high principles left a positive impact on the spirit and 2-19 tradition of college football in America; and 2-20 WHEREAS, Gil Steinke lived his life to the fullest and was a 2-21 devoted husband, father, and grandfather who leaves behind memories 2-22 that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, 2-23 therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-25 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 3-1 bereaved family of Gil Steinke: his wife, Mary Houston Steinke; 3-2 his sons, Leslie Steinke and Larry Steinke; his daughter, 3-3 Jan Starnes; his brothers, Ervin Steinke and Raymond Steinke; his 3-4 sisters, Ella Kunkel and Lil Amos; and his five grandchildren; and, 3-5 be it further 3-6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-7 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 3-8 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 3-9 in memory of Gil Steinke. 3-10 Truan 3-11 Armbrister Henderson Ratliff 3-12 Barrientos Leedom Rosson 3-13 Bivins Lucio Shapiro 3-14 Brown Luna Sibley 3-15 Cain Madla Sims 3-16 Ellis Moncrief Turner 3-17 Gallegos Montford Wentworth 3-18 Galloway Nelson West 3-19 Harris Nixon Whitmire 3-20 Haywood Patterson Zaffirini 3-21 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-22 ______________________________________ 3-23 President of the Senate 3-24 I hereby certify that the above 3-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 4-1 on May 19, 1995, by a rising vote. 4-2 ______________________________________ 4-3 Secretary of the Senate 4-4 ______________________________________ 4-5 Dean of the Senate
