    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The economic future and well-being of the
    1-3  State of Texas lies with the ability, education, and initiative
    1-4  of its young people; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, It is these individuals who will largely be
    1-6  responsible for transforming Texas into a technologically oriented
    1-7  society; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The Texas Society of Professional Engineers, through
    1-9  the MATHCOUNTS program, is striving to prepare these students for
   1-10  the challenges ahead; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to
   1-12  encourage seventh-grade and eighth-grade students to enhance their
   1-13  mathematics skills and to reward these "mathletes" for their superior
   1-14  skill and efforts; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Nationally recognized by the President of the
   1-16  United States, the Vice-President, and members of Congress, as well
   1-17  as by the Secretary of Education, the National Council of Teachers
   1-18  of Mathematics, the National Science Foundation, and the Texas State
   1-19  Board of Education, the program received financial and administrative
   1-20  support from the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA
   1-21  Insurance Companies, NASA, and others; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Texas MATHCOUNTS derives its financial support
   1-23  from the generosity of such corporate and foundation leaders as
    2-1  NationsBank, 3M, Advanced Micro Devices, Chevron U.S.A., Incorporated,
    2-2  Compaq Computer Foundation, Motorola, Sid Richardson Foundation,
    2-3  Southwest Airlines, Southwestern Bell Foundation, Texas Instruments,
    2-4  Incorporated, Texas Utilities Electric, SEMATECH, Texas Society of
    2-5  Professional Engineers auxiliaries, and Texas Society of Professional
    2-6  Engineers chapters; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, This year's "Texas Team" consisting of Weiyi Li
    2-8  of College Station, Ben Mathews of Dallas, Matt Mendicino of
    2-9  San Antonio, Cody Patterson of Weatherford, and Coach John Cocharo
   2-10  of Dallas travelled to Washington, D.C., for the April 28 National
   2-11  MATHCOUNTS Competition where they distinguished themselves and the
   2-12  State of Texas by achieving the rank of second in the nation; now,
   2-13  therefore, be it
   2-14        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-15  74th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud these students, their
   2-16  teachers, and their peers for their contribution to the future of
   2-17  Texas; and, be it further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-19  members of the "Texas Team" as an expression of esteem and respect
   2-20  from the Texas Senate.
