No. 1138 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Mary Beatrice Romani 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-6 of Laredo in mourning the death of Mary Beatrice Romani on 1-7 January 7, 1994; and 1-8 WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Laredo, she was very active 1-9 in many civic and church organizations; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Mary Beatrice attended the public schools in 1-11 Laredo, and she graduated from Martin High School in 1960; she 1-12 gave up the chance to go to college in order to help her brothers 1-13 and sisters pursue higher education; and 1-14 WHEREAS, She married John A. Romani on June 20, 1965, after 1-15 the two had met in the stockroom of McClellan's Department Store; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, A woman who wanted to give back to her community, 1-18 she was a 25-year volunteer for the Knights of Columbus, Councils 1-19 2304, 7797, and 9626, participating in their Deaf Ministry program; 1-20 and 1-21 WHEREAS, This generous woman gave unselfishly of her time 1-22 and energy to the Knights of Columbus, helping when they brought 1-23 the mentally retarded into the ministry program also; and 2-1 WHEREAS, It was this aspect of her work with persons with 2-2 disabilities that drew her into the Head Start program; she began 2-3 her work with Head Start as a part-time worker in the mornings and 2-4 a volunteer in the afternoons; for the past seven years before her 2-5 death, she had been employed by the Laredo Head Start Agency as a 2-6 Disability Aide; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Mrs. Romani and her husband were also volunteers 2-8 for the Laredo Police Department for almost 10 years; they also 2-9 served their community as senior advisors for the Catholic Youth 2-10 Organization, Laredo Deanery, from 1967 through 1975; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Mary Romani was also active in the Mary Help of 2-12 Christians Parent-Teachers Association and served as a room mother 2-13 for nine years; and 2-14 WHEREAS, A lady with deep religious convictions, she was a 2-15 devout Catholic; she had been an active member for 22 years of 2-16 Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, where she sang in the 2-17 choir; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Her commitments to God, family, and community are 2-19 reflected through her many years of service to each; her community 2-20 will deeply miss Mary Romani whose wisdom and experience were 2-21 invaluable to those who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-24 members of her family: her husband, John A. Romani; her daughter, 2-25 Michelle Romani; her mother, Gloria Smith; her brothers, 3-1 Andrew E. Smith, Henry F. Smith, and Chester F.
