    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
    1-3  in recognizing Lance Armstrong, a member of the Motorola Cycling
    1-4  Team, on his spectacular victory in the 1995 Tour DuPont race in
    1-5  Greensboro, North Carolina, and on his excellent cycling career;
    1-6  and
    1-7        WHEREAS, At the age of 23, Lance Armstrong has already
    1-8  established an exceptional professional cycling career in only a
    1-9  two-year time period; he has won the 1993 World and United States
   1-10  Pro Championships, a Tour de France stage, and 11 other race events;
   1-11  and
   1-12        WHEREAS, A former triathlete who became the United States
   1-13  national triathlon sprint champion at 17, Lance began cycling full
   1-14  time five years ago, and in 1993, at the age of 21, he became the
   1-15  second youngest rider to win the World Championships and one of the
   1-16  youngest to win a stage of the Tour de France; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, He also captured the top prize ever offered in pro
   1-18  cycling in a three-race sweep of the Thrift Drug Triple Crown of
   1-19  Racing, which concluded with the United States Professional Road
   1-20  Race Championship; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, A star athlete who now has a remarkable record,
   1-22  Lance Armstrong placed first in the 1994 Tour DuPont, Overall, and
   1-23  first in the 1994 Thrift Drug Classic, before heading into his 1995
    2-1  races; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, By crossing the line of the 1995 Tour DuPont this
    2-3  May, he scored the best stage race victory of his career, taking
    2-4  overall victory in a race he had dreamed of winning for three years;
    2-5  and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Through his victory, Lance garnered the King of the
    2-7  Mountain competition and became the second American to win the
    2-8  nation's race and became the record-holder for the highest number
    2-9  of podium appearances in the DuPont race--at the age of 23, he made
   2-10  13 appearances; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, The Tour DuPont is the most prestigious cycling
   2-12  race in the United States and entails a 12-day journey through
   2-13  five of the country's mid-Atlantic states; the ride is a grueling
   2-14  combination of time trials, mountainous climbs, and sprints; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, After sprinting up the steep Mountain Lake climb and
   2-16  winning the fourth stage, Lance did not surrender the rest of the
   2-17  race; he tied the DuPont record for the most stage wins and set a
   2-18  new course record of 56'32" for the Roanoke time trial; and
   2-19        WHEREAS, A fearless racer with extraordinary stamina,
   2-20  Lance Armstrong, raised in Plano and now living and training in
   2-21  Austin, is an exceptional individual who works hard at the sport
   2-22  he loves, and his outstanding accomplishments are a source of much
   2-23  pride and joy to the citizens of Texas and to citizens across the
   2-24  country; now, therefore, be it
   2-25        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    3-1  74th Legislature, hereby commend Lance Armstrong on his remarkable
    3-2  professional cycling career and extend congratulations to him on
    3-3  his 1995 Tour DuPont victory; and, be it further
    3-4        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
    3-5  as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
