    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
    1-3  recognizing the members of the Westview Middle School Olympiad Team
    1-4  on capturing the state championship title in the Science Olympiad
    1-5  held in January of 1995; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, It is the second consecutive year for Westview Middle
    1-7  School to claim the state championship in the Science Olympiad, and
    1-8  the team members are now representing the State of Texas in the
    1-9  national competition which is being held in Indiana; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, The Science Olympiad was created in 1983 to serve
   1-11  as an alternative to conventional science fairs and tournaments and
   1-12  to promote student interest in the field of science; there are over
   1-13  12,000 schools from across the United States, grades kindergarten
   1-14  through 12, that participate in the Olympiad; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The students and teachers who compete in the
   1-16  Science Olympiad are highly dedicated participants who devote
   1-17  an extraordinary amount of time and effort in preparation for the
   1-18  event, which is held on local, state, and national levels; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, The Science Olympiad consists of 32 individual
   1-20  and team events that require expertise in biology, earth science,
   1-21  chemistry, physics, problem-solving, and technology; the Olympiad
   1-22  events require group planning and cooperation and are noted for
   1-23  promoting team spirit and good sportsmanship; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, The students on the Westview Middle School Olympiad
    2-2  Team have displayed perseverance and remarkable ability, and they
    2-3  and their coaches have brought honor to their school, to their
    2-4  community, and to the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-6  74th Legislature, hereby commend the coaches of the Westview Middle
    2-7  School team, Colleen Moore, Brian Littlefield, Lorraine Perea, and
    2-8  John Thomas, and extend congratulations to the following Olympians
    2-9  for their outstanding performances:  Nathan Drozd, T. K. Focht,
   2-10  Sonia Goel, Samir Goel, Hubert Ham, Aaron Jones, Keri Kunschik,
   2-11  Kevin Lawhon, Simone Nichols, David Price, Susie Rees, Julie Rosser,
   2-12  Elizabeth Ruetz, Atasha Smith, Patrick Tarlton, Justin Whitworth,
   2-13  Michael Vega, Molly Potter, and Sean Williams; and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-15  Westview Middle School as an expression of esteem from the
   2-16  Texas Senate.
