1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
1-3 pride in recognizing Paul J. Meyer, an outstanding citizen and
1-4 the founder of SMI, Incorporated, and Leadership Management,
1-5 Incorporated; and
1-6 WHEREAS, A firm believer in the concept that people possess
1-7 unlimited potential for success, Paul Meyer founded his first
1-8 company, SMI, Incorporated, in 1960, and shortly thereafter,
1-9 Leadership Management, Incorporated; both firms were established
1-10 for the purpose of helping individuals to develop their management
1-11 skills and to develop their potential for professional success; and
1-12 WHEREAS, An inspirational and resourceful leader, Mr. Meyer
1-13 has developed over 20 personal and professional improvement
1-14 programs and courses; and
1-15 WHEREAS, His companies expanded into related areas
1-16 including printing, manufacturing, and recording, and they now
1-17 operate throughout the United States and in more than 60 countries
1-18 in 16 languages; and
1-19 WHEREAS, A man of remarkable talent and energy, Mr. Meyer
1-20 has expanded family business ventures to include more than 40
1-21 corporations dealing in such fields as aviation, sales, finance,
1-22 commercial real estate, thoroughbred horses, and educational
1-23 software; and
2-1 WHEREAS, He is also the author of numerous writings
2-2 including personal leadership and marketing programs and
2-3 motivational and goal-setting programs; his articles have
2-4 appeared in over 200 magazines and journals; and
2-5 WHEREAS, A great humanitarian who considers his personal
2-6 success a gift from God, Paul Meyer is an extraordinary
2-7 individual and a distinguished gentleman whose philanthropic
2-8 causes are centered on his church, world evangelism, youth
2-9 organizations, and education; and
2-10 WHEREAS, He has been instrumental in founding five
2-11 charitable foundations to promote education as well as
2-12 organizations throughout the world that provide support to
2-13 youngsters through a variety of programs; and
2-14 WHEREAS, In 1988, Mr. Meyer established the Passport to
2-15 Success Foundation, Incorporated, an organization created to
2-16 provide scholarships for college or technical education to
2-17 economically disadvantaged youths who are willing to meet
2-18 certain requirements; and
2-19 WHEREAS, To participate in the program, youths are required
2-20 to stay in school, earn a scholastic record that would gain college
2-21 entrance, join the Waco Boys and Girls Club, and participate in the
2-22 Keystone Club; and
2-23 WHEREAS, An outstanding program, Passport to Success,
2-24 Incorporated, has already enabled many young people to continue
2-25 their education past high school; more than 125 students have
3-1 received scholarships and 12 students have received college degrees;
3-2 one of the program's students is in law school, one is in graduate
3-3 school, and one is a partner in a Dallas firm that designs computer
3-4 systems; and
3-5 WHEREAS, A tremendously active civic leader, Paul Meyer
3-6 continues to serve as chairman of the board of Passport to Success
3-7 Foundation, Incorporated, and is a member of the Waco Chamber of
3-8 Commerce; he also serves on the boards of such organizations as
3-9 Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Baylor-Waco Foundation,
3-10 Hillcrest Memorial Hospital, and the Retina Foundation of the
3-11 Southwest; and
3-12 WHEREAS, A highly respected orator, he has served as the
3-13 featured speaker for organizations throughout the United States,
3-14 as well as in Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada, South America, and
3-15 South Africa; and
3-16 WHEREAS, His numerous accolades and awards include honorary
3-17 doctorate degrees from three leading universities, Distinguished
3-18 Eagle Scout and Silver Keystone awards, the Jaycee Americanism
3-19 Award, a special award from the Freedoms Foundation of America,
3-20 and a special citation from the Haggai Institute of Advanced
3-21 Leadership in Singapore; and
3-22 WHEREAS, Paul Meyer's programs have had far-reaching
3-23 effects on communities and individuals throughout the world, and
3-24 his superior accomplishments reflect his uncommon dedication and
3-25 commitment to assisting those in need and to helping his fellowman
4-1 to succeed; now, therefore, be it
4-2 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
4-3 74th Legislature, hereby commend Paul J. Meyer for his exceptional
4-4 achievements and express to him appreciation for his leadership,
4-5 talent, and philanthropic pursuits; and, be it further
4-6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4-7 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
