LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas
FISCAL NOTE
74th Regular Session
April 23, 1995
TO: Honorable Keith Oakley, Chair IN RE: Committee Substitute
Committee on Public Safety for
House of Representatives House Bill
Austin, Texas No. 2261
FROM: John Keel, Director
In response to your request for a Fiscal Note on House Bill No.
2261 (relating to the authority of political subdivisions to
contract with the Department of Public Safety to assist in the
enforcement of outstanding warrants of arrest for the failure to
appear for certain traffic offenses, and authorizing the
department to contract with a private vendor to facilitate such
contracts) this office has determined the following:
The bill would authorize the Department of Public Safety to
contract with city and county political subdivisions for denial
of renewal of a persons driver's license for failure to appear
for certain traffic offenses.
The bill would also establish an assessment of a fee of $30 for
each violation for which the defendant failed to appear. Ten
dollars would be retained to the county and $20 would be sent to
the state. The bill would dedicate $10 of each fee to the
Department of Public Safety and the other $10 would be deposited
to the credit of the general revenue fund.
The probable fiscal implication of implementing the provisions of
the bill during each of the first five years following passage
is estimated as follows:
