LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE 74th Regular Session March 26, 1995 TO: Honorable John Whitmire, Chair IN RE: Senate Bill No. 254 Committee on Criminal Justice By: Wentworth Senate Austin, Texas FROM: John Keel, Director In response to your request for a Fiscal Note on Senate Bill No. 254 (relating to authorizing community supervision and corrections departments to employ and commission as peace officers field unit officers) this office has determined the following: The bill would make no appropriation but could provide the legal basis for an appropriation of funds to implement the provisions of the bill. The bill would amend Article 2.12, Code of Criminal Procedure to expand the definition of a commissioned peace officer to include field unit officers employed by local community supervision and corrections departments. The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education would be required to certify and license successful candidates for licensure. The probable fiscal implication of implementing the provisions of the bill during each of the first five years following passage is estimated as follows: Fiscal Probable Cost Out Year of Law Officer Standards & Education Fund 116 GR Consolidated 1996 $52,834 1997 33,249 1998 27,811 1999 27,811 2000 27,811 Similar annual fiscal implications would continue as long as the provisions of the bill are in effect. The bill would result in training costs incurred by local jurisdictions of approximately $720,000 in fiscal year 1996 and $450,000 in fiscal year 1997.
