LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE 74th Regular Session February 20, 1995 TO: Honorable Don Henderson, Chair IN RE: Senate Bill No. 264 Committee on Jurisprudence By: Luna, Gregory Senate Austin, Texas FROM: John Keel, Director In response to your request for a Fiscal Note on Senate Bill No. 264 (Relating to jury service by deaf or hearing impaired persons.) this office has determined the following: This bill would require a court to appoint a qualified interpreter for deaf or hearing impaired persons during voir dire, trial, and jury deliberations. The interpreter would be entitled to a fee determined by the court in consultation with the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. If the interpreter is required to travel, all actual expenses of travel, lodging and meals incurred would be paid at the state rate for reimbursement. The county is required to pay these fees out of its general fund. No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. The fiscal implication to units of local government cannot be determined.
