SRC-TNM H.B. 2883 75(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center H.B. 2883 By: Hunter (Barrientos) State Affairs 5-13-97 Engrossed DIGEST The Texas State Cemetery was established to honor Texans who have made a contribution to the history of this state. This list includes all those officials elected or appointed to service in the state government. However, there is a limited number of Texans who have made significant contributions to Texas history through service to the federal government and yet are not approved for burial in the state cemetery. H.B. 2883 would extend burial rights in the state cemetery to individuals who have served the state through services as a certain elected or appointed federal official. PURPOSE As proposed, H.B. 2883 outlines provisions regarding eligibility of certain federal officials for burial in the state cemetery. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Section 2165.256, Government Code, by adding Subsection (k), to set forth certain federal officials eligible for burial in the state cemetery in addition to other persons specified as eligible under this section and subject to the same privileges, requirements, and conditions that are applicable to those persons and their family members. SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 1997. SECTION 3. Emergency clause.
