DIGEST 

Currently, certain provisions in Texas law relate to the former Corpus
Christi State University. Some provisions in state law may be obsolete and
require changing in order to reflect the university's new name of Texas
A&M University--Corpus Christi.  This bill eliminates certain obsolete
provisions relating to Corpus Christi State University and reflects the
name change of Corpus Christi State University to Texas A&M
University--Corpus Christi. 

PURPOSE

As proposed, S.B. 816 eliminates certain obsolete provisions relating to
Corpus Christi State University and reflects the name change of Corpus
Christi State University to Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi. 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state
officer, institution, or agency. 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1. Amends Section 55.1711, Education Code, as follows:

Sec. 55.1711. New heading:  TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY--CORPUS CHRISTI.
Authorizes the board of regents of the Texas A&M University System to
acquire, purchase, construct, improve, enlarge, and equip property,
buildings, structures, and facilities for Texas A&M University--Corpus
Christi, rather than Corpus Christi State University.  Makes conforming
changes. 

SECTION 2. Amends Section 61.003(3), Education Code, to redefine "general
academic teaching institution." 

SECTION 3. Amends Chapter 87E, Education Code, as follows:

SUBCHAPTER E.  New heading:  TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY--CORPUS CHRISTI

Sec. 87.401. ESTABLISHMENT; SCOPE.  Makes a conforming change.

Sec. 87.402. COURSES AND DEGREES; RULES; JOINT APPOINTMENTS.  Makes a
conforming change.  Deletes existing Subsections 87.403 and 87.404,
relating to admission standards and limitations in course offerings at
Corpus Christi State University. 

SECTION 4. Provides that a reference in law to Corpus Christi State
University means Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi.  Provides that an
appropriation for the use and benefit of Corpus Christi State University
is available for the use and benefit of Texas A&M University--Corpus
Christi. 

SECTION 5. Emergency clause.
  Effective date: upon passage.
