SRC-TNM S.B. 1219 75(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center S.B. 1219 By: Patterson Education 3-24-97 As Filed DIGEST Currently, Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) was recently added to the A&M University System, but was not given status as a branch campus of Texas A&M University at College Station. S.B. 1219 would give TAMUG status as a branch campus, thereby facilitating integration of technology systems, enhanced recruiting abilities, and access for TAMUG to coastal resources for graduate research. PURPOSE As proposed, S.B. 1219 outlines provisions regarding the power of the board of regents of the Texas A&M University System to designate Texas A&M University at Galveston as a branch campus of Texas A&M University. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Section 87.201(a), Education Code, to require the board of regents of the Texas A&M University System to have the authority to designate Texas A&M University at Galveston as a branch of Texas A&M University; however, such designation, if made, is prohibited from changing the role and mission of Texas A&M University at Galveston as specified in this section. SECTION 2. Emergency clause. Effective date: 90 days after adjournment.
