A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to notification of a judgment against a Mexican resident
1-3 arising from a vehicle accident.
1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-5 SECTION 1. Section 601.331(e), Transportation Code, is
1-6 amended to read as follows:
1-7 (e) If the defendant named in a judgment reported to the

1-9 copy of the judgment to the official in charge of issuing driver's
1-10 licenses and vehicle registrations of the state, [or] province of
1-11 Canada, or state of Mexico in which the defendant resides.
1-12 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only
1-13 to a judgment rendered on or after the effective date of this Act.
1-14 A judgment rendered before the effective date of this Act is
1-15 governed by the law in effect when the judgment was rendered, and
1-16 the former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
1-17 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 1997.
1-18 SECTION 4. The importance of this legislation and the
1-19 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-20 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-21 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-22 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
