                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

 1-1                                   AN ACT

 1-2     relating to the use of certain awards under the Texas Advanced

 1-3     Placement Incentive Program.

 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 28.053(b), Education Code, is amended to

 1-6     read as follows:

 1-7           (b)  A teacher participating in the program may be awarded:

 1-8                 (1)  subsidized teacher training, not to exceed $450

 1-9     for each teacher, for:

1-10                       (A)  a college advanced placement course or

1-11     international baccalaureate course; or

1-12                       (B)  a high-school-level course necessary as

1-13     preparation for a college advanced placement course or

1-14     international baccalaureate course;

1-15                 (2)  a one-time award of $250 for teaching a college

1-16     advanced placement course or an international baccalaureate course

1-17     for the first time;  and

1-18                 (3)  a share of the teacher bonus pool, which shall be

1-19     distributed by the teacher's school in shares proportional to the

1-20     number of courses taught.

1-21           SECTION 2.  This Act applies beginning with the 1997-1998

1-22     school year.

1-23           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the

1-24     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

 2-1     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

 2-2     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

 2-3     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,

 2-4     and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its

 2-5     passage, and it is so enacted.
