1-1 AN ACT

1-2 relating to fees for correspondence courses for certain veterans

1-3 and the children of certain veterans.

1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

1-5 SECTION 1. Section 54.545(c), Education Code, is amended to

 1-6 read as follows:

1-7 (c) Subchapters B and D do not apply to a fee charged under

1-8 this section, except to a fee for a correspondence course taken by

1-9 a student who would qualify for an exemption from tuition under

1-10 Section 54.203 if the correspondence course applies towards the

1-11 student's degree plan. The governing board of an institution of

1-12 higher education may grant an exemption provided by Section 54.203

1-13 for continuing education courses.

1-14 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1997.

1-15 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the

1-16 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-17 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-18 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

1-19 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
