Section 54.545, Education Code, is amended by 1-10 amending Subsection (c) to read as follows: 1-11 (c) Subchapter B and D do not apply to a fee charged under 1-12 this section, except that a governing board of an institution of 1-13 higher education may grant an exemption provided by Section 54.203 1-14 if such an exemption will not result in an increased cost to other 1-15 students or does not diminish the availability of correspondence 1-16 courses. 1-17 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-18 AN ACT 1-19 relating to fees for correspondence courses for certain veterans 1-20 and the children of certain veterans. 1-21 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-22 SECTION 1. Section 54.545(c), Education Code, is amended to 1-23 read as follows: 1-24 (c) Subchapters B and D do not apply to a fee charged under 1-25 this section, except to a fee for a correspondence course taken by 1-26 a student who would qualify for an exemption from tuition under 1-27 Section 54.203. 1-28 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1997. 1-29 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the 1-30 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-31 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-32 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-33 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended. 1-34 * * * * *
