No. 2616 75R8367 CAG-D A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to the erection of statues of distinguished Texans on the 1-3 campus of Texas Tech University. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 109, Education Code, is 1-6 amended by adding Section 109.53 to read as follows: 1-7 Sec. 109.53. STATUES OF DISTINGUISHED TEXANS. (a) The board 1-8 may erect and display statues of distinguished Texans who are also 1-9 graduates of Texas Tech University or a professional school or 1-10 component institution of Texas Tech University. 1-11 (b) The board shall designate an area to display the 1-12 statues. The area must be visible from the main entrance to the 1-13 university and located near any existing statue that has been 1-14 erected and displayed representing the spirit of or a symbol of the 1-15 university. 1-16 (c) The board shall move any statue of a distinguished Texan 1-17 who is also a graduate of Texas Tech University or a professional 1-18 school or component institution of Texas Tech University that is 1-19 located on the campus of the university to the area designated 1-20 under Subsection (b). 1-21 (d) The board may accept donations, gifts, grants, and 1-22 endowments for purposes of this section. A statue may be purchased, 1-23 erected, and displayed only with funds accepted under this 1-24 subsection. 2-1 SECTION 2. The importance of this legislation and the 2-2 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 2-3 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 2-4 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 2-5 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended, 2-6 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its 2-7 passage, and it is so enacted.
