                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

 1-1 AN ACT

1-2 relating to the compensation of constables in certain counties.

1-3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

1-4 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 152, Local Government Code,

1-5 is amended by adding Section 152.907 to read as follows:

1-6 Sec. 152.907. COMPENSATION OF CONSTABLES IN CERTAIN

1-7 COUNTIES. The commissioners court of a county with a population of

1-8 700,000 or more and with fewer than eight precincts from which

1-9 constables may be elected shall pay each constable of the county a

1-10 salary in an amount equal to 80 percent of the salary of the county

1-11 judge, in addition to any compensation based on longevity.

1-12 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1997, and

1-13 applies only to the salary paid to a constable in a county fiscal

1-14 year beginning after the effective date of this Act.

1-15 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the

1-16 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-17 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-18 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

1-19 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
