A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to the classifications of police officers within the
1-3 Department of Public Safety.
1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-5 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 411, Government Code, is
1-6 amended by adding Section 411.007(g) to read as follows:
1-7 Section 411.007(g) The commission shall adopt rules
1-8 designating the position of Capitol Police Officer to include the
1-9 grades of Capitol Police Officer III and Capitol Police Officer IV.
1-10 The salary and status of Capitol Police Officer III shall be equal
1-11 to that of DPS Trooper III and the salary and status of Capitol
1-12 Police Officer IV shall be equal to that of DPS Trooper IV. The
1-13 position of Capitol Police Corporal shall be re-classified as
1-14 Capitol Police Sergeant. The position of Capitol Police Corporal
1-15 shall be abolished and the position of Capitol Police Sergeant
1-16 shall constitute the position of a first-line supervisor. The
1-17 salary and status of a Capitol Police Sergeant shall be equal to
1-18 that of a DPS Sergeant.
1-19 SECTION 2. This act takes effect September 1, 1997.
1-20 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the
1-21 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-22 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
2-1 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
2-2 days in each house be suspended, and this rules is hereby
2-3 suspended.
