                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

 1-1                                   AN ACT

 1-2     relating to the longevity pay for members of certain municipal fire

 1-3     and police departments.

 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 141.032, Local Government Code, is

 1-6     amended to read as follows:

 1-7           Sec. 141.032.  Longevity Pay.  In a municipality with a

 1-8     population of 10,000 or more, each member of the fire or police

 1-9     department is entitled to receive, in addition to all other money

1-10     paid for services rendered in the department, longevity pay of $8

1-11     [$4] a month for each year of service in the department, not to

1-12     exceed 25 years.

1-13           SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act to Section

1-14     141.032, Local Government Code, applies only to longevity pay

1-15     awarded on or after the effective date of this Act.

1-16           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 1997.

1-17           SECTION 4.  The importance of this legislation and the

1-18     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-19     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-20     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

1-21     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
