HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Joseph Lewis Rutledge 1-2 were greatly saddened by his passing on December 31, 1996, at the 1-3 age of 56, and we join members of the Permian Basin community in 1-4 mourning the loss of a devoted husband and father, a talented 1-5 teacher, and a dedicated mentor of young people; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Rutledge attended Prairie View 1-7 A&M University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1-8 mathematics with a minor in physics; he began his career with the 1-9 Ector County Independent School District in 1964, when he was hired 1-10 to teach physics at Blackshear High School; and 1-11 WHEREAS, In his 28 years as an educator, Mr. Rutledge 1-12 distinguished himself not only as an outstanding classroom 1-13 instructor and athletic coach but also as a skilled administrator; 1-14 in 1977 he earned a master's degree in educational administration 1-15 from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, and in 1991 he 1-16 was named Assistant Principal of the Year for Region 18 by the 1-17 Texas Association of Secondary School Principals; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Rutledge's commitment to youth extended well 1-19 beyond his career in education, for after his retirement from the 1-20 district, he went on to work with organizations such as the Career 1-21 Center Development Board, the Private Industry Council, and the 1-22 Texas Job Training Coordinating Council to assist young people in 1-23 finding employment; and 1-24 WHEREAS, A respected leader in the community, Mr. Rutledge 2-1 gave freely of his time and energy to a wide variety of civic 2-2 organizations, including the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the 2-3 Odessa Jaycees, and the Family Outreach Center, and he was a 2-4 charter member of the Black Chamber of Commerce of the Permian 2-5 Basin; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Despite his many noteworthy achievements, 2-7 Mr. Rutledge's greatest source of joy and inspiration was 2-8 undoubtedly his loving and close-knit family, and though we join 2-9 them in mourning his passing, his legacy of dedicated service to 2-10 his neighbors will surely live on in the hearts of all those whose 2-11 lives he touched; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-13 hereby honor the memory of Joseph Lewis Rutledge and extend sincere 2-14 sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Leola Rutledge; 2-15 to his daughter, Laurel Rutledge; to his son, Joseph Rutledge, Jr.; 2-16 to his brothers, Paul Rutledge, Jr., and James Rutledge; to his 2-17 nephews and niece; and to all the relatives and many friends of 2-18 this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-20 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-21 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 2-22 memory of Joseph Lewis Rutledge.
