                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the city of Waxahachie has

 1-2     been justly renowned for its friendly people, thriving economy, and

 1-3     scenic natural beauty; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, One of Waxahachie's most appealing natural

 1-5     attractions is the crape myrtle, a shrub that can be found in

 1-6     particular abundance throughout the city; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Originally imported from China, the crape myrtle,

 1-8     Lagerstroemia indica, is a hearty flowering shrub that produces

 1-9     dazzling red, white, pink, and lavender blooms throughout the

1-10     summer months; and

1-11           WHEREAS, In an effort to further enhance the community's

1-12     visual splendor, the Crape Myrtle Council of Waxahachie is mounting

1-13     a drive to plant a large quantity of crape myrtle shrubs across the

1-14     city, which already boasts a profusion of these lovely plants; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Many local organizations have lent their support to

1-16     this worthy endeavor, including the Waxahachie Foundation,

1-17     Gardeners Limited, the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, Keep

1-18     Waxahachie Beautiful, the Waxahachie Independent School District,

1-19     and others too numerous to mention; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The planting of an additional 2,000 crape myrtles in

1-21     Waxahachie has encouraged tourism, increased civic pride, and

1-22     created a unique and beautiful physical environment for the

1-23     enjoyment of visitors and residents alike, and this admirable

1-24     project is truly worthy of special legislative recognition; now,

 2-1     therefore, be it

 2-2           RESOLVED, That the Legislature of the State of Texas hereby

 2-3     designate the city of Waxahachie as the Crape Myrtle Capital of

 2-4     Texas.
