HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. William A. Wiesner on March 17,
1-2 1996, has deprived the world of a skilled healer and loving husband
1-3 and friend, and the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas joins
1-4 his family and many friends in mourning their loss; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A native Texan, William Wiesner left his hometown of
1-6 Rowena at the age of 18 to attend The University of Texas at
1-7 Austin; supporting himself by manual labor, he earned his
1-8 bachelor's degree and in 1939 received his doctorate from The
1-9 University of Texas Medical School at Galveston; and
1-10 WHEREAS, During World War II, Dr. Wiesner was stationed in
1-11 the South Pacific and Japan, and his distinguished service in the
1-12 Army Medical Corps and the 263rd Amphibian Medical Battalion earned
1-13 him the rank of lieutenant colonel and the Bronze Star; and
1-14 WHEREAS, After the war's end, Dr. Wiesner completed his
1-15 surgical residency in Houston and embarked on a long and successful
1-16 medical career; it was there that he also took on the equally rich
1-17 and rewarding position of husband, when he and Trudie Meyering were
1-18 united in marriage on November 20, 1947; and
1-19 WHEREAS, In 1950, the young surgeon began his medical
1-20 practice in Odessa, and the Wiesners quickly became vital and
1-21 valued members of that community; Dr. Wiesner's dedicated efforts
1-22 helped to bring the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center to Odessa,
1-23 and he served the school as both interim associate dean and
1-24 clinical professor of surgery; he was honored for his outstanding
2-1 work in 1983, when he became the first Odessan to receive the Texas
2-2 Tech Dean's Distinguished Service Award; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Dr. Wiesner's stature among his peers was further
2-4 manifested in the numerous positions he held in the medical
2-5 community; a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he was
2-6 for eight years a member of the Texas Medical Association House of
2-7 Delegates, and he served on both the board of directors of the
2-8 Texas Tech Medical Foundation and the advisory council of the
2-9 Regional Academic Center; and
2-10 WHEREAS, A parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic
2-11 Church, Dr. Wiesner drew strength and inspiration from his faith
2-12 throughout his life, and his open, warm-hearted approach to his
2-13 life and work was a fitting expression of the Christian ideal of
2-14 compassion for others; and
2-15 WHEREAS, William Wiesner's death is a loss not only to his
2-16 loved ones but also to the people of Odessa; his professional gifts
2-17 were well matched to his gentle disposition, and the world is a
2-18 poorer place for his absence; now, therefore, be it
2-19 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-20 hereby honor the memory of Dr. William Wiesner and extend sincere
2-21 sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Trudie Wiesner;
2-22 to his brother, Dr. J. J. Wiesner; to his five nephews; and to all
2-23 the relatives and friends of this beloved man; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-25 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-26 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
2-27 memory of Dr. William Wiesner.
