1-1 WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately convey the deep shock and

1-2 sorrow felt by all Texans at the news of the great tragedy that has

1-3 occurred in Houston with the collapse of Northline Mall; and

 1-4 WHEREAS, At approximately 9 a.m., on January 30, 1997, brick

1-5 and concrete crashed to the floor of Northline Mall when a wall

1-6 collapsed as 14 huge concrete columns adjoining it fell, a walkway

1-7 crumbled, and the ceiling of the building caved in; and

1-8 WHEREAS, Though the stores in the mall had not yet opened for

1-9 business, a number of local citizens, including members of the

1-10 Northline Mall Walkers Club, were killed or seriously injured while

1-11 taking their daily walk; the building had become a popular

1-12 gathering place for many local retirees who enjoyed getting their

1-13 exercise in an environment where they felt free from concerns of

1-14 potential violence or bad weather; and

1-15 WHEREAS, While those involved struggle to rebuild their lives

1-16 in the aftermath of this devastating accident, our thoughts and

1-17 prayers are with them, and it is fitting that we remember at this

1-18 time the people who were killed or injured; now, therefore, be it

1-19 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas
