HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to join the citizens 1-2 of Edinburg in the joyous celebration of Edinburg Day at the State 1-3 Capitol on February 11, 1997; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Originally known as Chapin, the community serves as 1-5 the western gateway to the Lower Rio Grande Valley and as the 1-6 Hidalgo County seat; it first enjoyed a vibrant economy based on 1-7 ranching, but successful irrigation efforts and a temperate climate 1-8 have transformed the area into one of the nation's leading 1-9 producers of vegetables and citrus fruits, and the community is 1-10 also home to many thriving industries; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Edinburg's outstanding civic leadership and dramatic 1-12 expansion have generated significant economic growth; recent 1-13 construction has further enhanced the state-of-the-art Edinburg 1-14 Regional Medical Center, and new engineering and science buildings 1-15 have expanded educational opportunities at one of the valley's 1-16 premier institutions of higher learning, The University of 1-17 Texas-Pan American; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Edinburg boasts an active citizenry who champion a 1-19 variety of worthy causes through their involvement in such 1-20 organizations as the Edinburg 2020 Citizens Advisory Committees, 1-21 the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, the Edinburg Hospital Authority, 1-22 and the Edinburg Lions Club, and their stalwart commitment to these 1-23 and many other groups has made the community a better place to 1-24 live, work, and rear a family; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The city of Edinburg has earned well-deserved 2-2 acclaim for its exceptional achievements, and for the second time, 2-3 it has received the prestigious All-America City designation from 2-4 the National Civic League, a feat rarely matched by other 2-5 communities; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Recognizing that the blessings of liberty must be 2-7 continually safeguarded, Edinburg has always been willing to pay 2-8 the ultimate price for freedom by sending its best and brightest 2-9 citizens to fight for America's highest ideals; the community is 2-10 home to people from all walks of life, and it draws its strengths 2-11 and achievements from its diversity and proud history; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Edinburg has distinguished 2-13 itself as one of our state's most outstanding communities, and it 2-14 is indeed fitting that the city and its residents receive 2-15 appropriate legislative recognition for their many accomplishments; 2-16 now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-18 hereby designate February 11, 1997, as Edinburg Day at the Capitol 2-19 and welcome the members of the city's delegation on their visit to 2-20 Austin; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-22 prepared for the members of the Edinburg City Council as an 2-23 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and 2-24 Senate.
