HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Manuel R. Nunez has devoted much of his life to 1-2 assisting and serving the residents of Fort Stockton, and his 1-3 remarkable dedication will be rewarded on February 15, 1997, when 1-4 St. Joseph Park is renamed in his honor; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Nunez's contributions to the Fort Stockton 1-6 community have had a positive effect on many of this fine city's 1-7 residents; whether working through his church, the chamber of 1-8 commerce, or the local chapter of the American G.I. Forum, this 1-9 esteemed gentleman has made a difference in the lives of a great 1-10 many people; and 1-11 WHEREAS, A longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1-12 Mr. Nunez is in charge of this institution's numerous charitable 1-13 endeavors, including its food bank and thrift store; during one 1-14 particularly trying period that found the church without a pastor, 1-15 this exceptional man was appointed as the parish's acting 1-16 administrator, and in 1980 he was justly recognized as St. Joseph's 1-17 "Person of the Year"; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In 1986, the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce named 1-19 Mr. Nunez its "Outstanding Citizen" for his commitment to the 1-20 community; he has been involved with the chamber for many years and 1-21 has capably served on its board of directors and as second vice 1-22 president of the executive board; and 1-23 WHEREAS, A World War II veteran, Mr. Nunez was one of the 1-24 first residents of Pecos County to accept his country's call to 2-1 arms, and today he assists fellow veterans in applying for their 2-2 Veteran's Administration benefits; in addition, this selfless Texan 2-3 has acted as the services and rehabilitation chairman for the local 2-4 branch of the American Cancer Society for many years; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Nunez's service to Fort Stockton extends into 2-6 the area of education as well, and his terms as president of the 2-7 Butz School Parent-Teacher Association and as program chairman of 2-8 the Assist, Instruct, Direct and Educate (AIDE) program were highly 2-9 successful; in addition, as the first chairman of the Pecos County 2-10 Community Action Agency's board of directors, Mr. Nunez has done 2-11 much to protect and increase the benefits of low-income families; 2-12 and 2-13 WHEREAS, Manuel R. Nunez has earned the respect and 2-14 admiration of his fellow citizens for his tireless efforts to 2-15 improve the lives of those in need, and his enthusiasm in these 2-16 endeavors is truly deserving of special legislative recognition; 2-17 now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-19 hereby honor Manuel R. Nunez for his many years of service to the 2-20 city of Fort Stockton and extend to him sincere best wishes for 2-21 continued success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it 2-22 further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for Mr. Nunez as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-25 House of Representatives and Senate.
