HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to honor Max Sherman
1-2 for the many outstanding contributions he has made to the State of
1-3 Texas and to congratulate him on his recent designation as the 1996
1-4 Austinite of the Year by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce;
1-5 and
1-6 WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas School of Law,
1-7 he served his fellow citizens with honor and distinction as a
1-8 member of the Texas Senate from 1971 to 1977, earning mention on
1-9 Texas Monthly magazine's list of 10 best legislators throughout his
1-10 tenure; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Since leaving public office, he has worked for the
1-12 betterment of Texas as the president of West Texas State University
1-13 from 1977 to 1982, and more recently, as dean of the Lyndon B.
1-14 Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at
1-15 Austin; in that capacity, he has dedicated himself to making the
1-16 school one of the premier learning institutions in the country, and
1-17 his efforts have helped to prepare numerous individuals to face the
1-18 challenges and responsibilities of public service; and
1-19 WHEREAS, This respected educator currently holds the
1-20 university's Jake Pickle Regents Chair in Public Affairs and is an
1-21 esteemed member of the National Commission on State and Local
1-22 Public Service; his career has been marked by the highest ideals of
1-23 ethics and integrity, and though he is completing his tenure as
1-24 dean at the end of the academic year, he will continue to share his
2-1 extensive knowledge and expertise with our future leaders as a
2-2 professor at the LBJ School; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Dean Sherman has maintained an
2-4 abiding commitment to the community he is proud to call home, and
2-5 the many organizations that have benefited from his active
2-6 involvement include the Austin Project Task Force, the Austin
2-7 Independent School District, the Austin Presbyterian Theological
2-8 Seminary, and the University Presbyterian Church of Austin; and
2-9 WHEREAS, Max Sherman has served his state and community in
2-10 myriad ways, and it is indeed a privilege to recognize him on the
2-11 occasion of his most recent honor; now, therefore, be it
2-12 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-13 hereby commend Max Sherman for his exemplary service in behalf of
2-14 all Texans and extend to him heartfelt congratulations on his
2-15 designation as the 1996 Austinite of the Year by the Greater Austin
2-16 Chamber of Commerce; and, be it further
2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18 prepared for Dean Sherman as an expression of highest regard by the
2-19 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
