                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, Texans place great value in the importance of

 1-2     education, for the future of the Lone Star State lies in the hands

 1-3     of our children, and they must be fully equipped with the skills

 1-4     needed to successfully meet the challenges that lie ahead in the

 1-5     21st Century; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Such success would not be possible without the

 1-7     commitment and enthusiasm exhibited by teachers such as those we

 1-8     are recognizing today, the 1997 honorees for the Texas Excellence

 1-9     Awards for Outstanding Teachers; and

1-10           WHEREAS, These fine educators include three recipients of the

1-11     Lillian B. Rhodes Teaching Award, Sue Blanchette of W. T. White

1-12     High School in Dallas, Nancy Lehmann-Carssow of Lanier High School

1-13     in Austin, and Billie Roberts of Roosevelt High School in Dallas;

1-14     three recipients of the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Teaching Award,

1-15     Bonnie Edmund of Pine Tree High School in Longview, Wendy McCuiston

1-16     of Jefferson High School in El Paso, and Tracye Wear of Jones High

1-17     School in Houston; the Glaxo Teaching Award recipient Vernon

1-18     Eastepp of White Oak High School in White Oak; the Mike A. Myers

1-19     Teaching Award recipient Donna Kvapil of Andress High School in El

1-20     Paso; the Houston Texas Exes Teaching Award recipient Judy McEnany

1-21     of Lamar High School in Houston; the Gordon Appleman Teaching Award

1-22     recipient Merle Picone of Brenham High School in Brenham; and the

1-23     Verna Rogers Teaching Award recipient Merlinda Rodriguez of

1-24     Highland Park Elementary School in Austin; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, All are highly regarded professionals who have

 2-2     earned recognition from their peers for their proven ability to

 2-3     motivate students, their instructional expertise, and the

 2-4     cooperative manner in which they work with their colleagues and

 2-5     members of the administration; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Nominated by their principals, this year's honorees

 2-7     were selected from a large and talented field of entrants, and

 2-8     their receipt of this prestigious honor entitled them to attend the

 2-9     1997 Conference on Texas Excellence on Education held at The

2-10     University of Texas at Austin, where they were presented with both

2-11     a cash award of $1,000 and a specially commissioned bronze

2-12     sculpture; and

2-13           WHEREAS, Now in its 11th year, the Texas Excellence Awards

2-14     program is jointly presented by the university's College of

2-15     Education and the U.T. Ex Students Association; as a recipient of a

2-16     Texas Excellence Award, each of these educators has achieved a rare

2-17     distinction that is truly deserving of special legislative

2-18     recognition; now, therefore, be it

2-19           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-20     hereby officially commend the recipients of the 1997 Texas

2-21     Excellence Awards for Outstanding Teachers and extend to them

2-22     sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness in the

2-23     years to come; and, be it further

2-24           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-25     prepared for these dedicated teachers as an expression of high

2-26     regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
